Instructions for Closing the seam of Even and Odd Count Flat Peyote Stitch
With Flat Peyote, whether it is Odd Count or Even Count, the beads will stitch together at the seam like the teeth on a zipper. BUT, you must make sure you have an EVEN number of ROWS, Not necessarily an even number of beads per row (beads Per Row is how the name Even or Odd count is given to a piece of beadwork). The above diagram shows how ROWS are counted. Example - The Twist Pen is done in Odd Count Peyote, by stringing on 41 beads (when using size 11/0 Delicas(r)), but 32 ROWS are done, making an even number of ROWS.
The two edges of the beaded rectangle will have ‘notches' made by the nature of the peyote stitch. These notches are the ‘teeth' of the zipper, as shown below.
You must then zig-zag the beading thread through the ‘zipper'. After you have gone all the way up the seam, it is a good idea to zig-zag back down a few beads then finish off the thread in whatever manner you choose. You will have to zig-zag through some beads with the thread at the other end (beginning) of your beadwork, and finish off that thread also.
You can stitch up this seam with the beads on or off the brass tube, or around a piece of cardboard, whatever is easier for you. If you don't put it around the brass tube while stitching the seam, slip the ‘bead tube' over the brass tube a couple of times during the closing of the seam, to see how its going. Stitches besides Peyote have their own method of closing the seam.
