Follow the order given below to assemble the finished bead/brass tubes and remaining parts. On some projects it is essential to do the parts in sequence. If you don't, you may put in a part, then put in another part, press or hammer, and the first part will go in beyond where it is supposed to. Start each step by hand; then you will need to finish with a vise OR hammer OR Quick Grip Clamp (r) to gently press the parts together (no glue is used). When using a vise, line the jaws with tough rubber, or a 1/4" stack of thick cardboard. The Quick Grip Clamp(r) comes with rubber pads. This will protect the gold finish and metal parts of the project from the pressure of the vise or hammer. The tendency is to over hammer, etc., be careful.

Pencil Specifics and Final Assembly -

NEVER use any super glues or super gels on these projects. They have a reaction with the plating and form a ‘frost'. This can take up to 24 hours to appear, and sometimes Cannot be wiped off.

1) This project is a little different from the others. Usually your ‘bead tubes' will cover the entire length of the brass tubes. On the Pencil, the ‘bead tube' you make for the bottom (using the provided blank graph), will  be a little shorter.  This is because when you get to the point of putting on the Nib, the nib is going to go over the slightly tapered brass piece attached to the bottom of the Bottom barrel, and a little past it up on the brass tube.

2) After you have finished your ‘beaded brass tubes', and put (or glued) them over the brass tubes, you will move your attention the Top brass tube assembly, and put on the open-ended cap and clip. (That is, if you plan to use the clip. Otherwise, just put on the open-ended cap.) Slip the open-ended cap through the hole in the clip. Press this unit into the top of the whole assembly. Using proper thickness cardboard, at least 1/8" to 1/4" thick, lightly hammer this unit into the top tube.

3) Now, press this entire Top assembly (center ring part first), into the totally open end of the Bottom barrel assembly.   Put padding (cardboard) under the Nib, to prevent it from being damaged.  Hammer lightly and cautiously, these can be a tight fit.

Sometimes the Mechanism's gold-plated top end ( has an eraser under this 'gold end') won't easily slip through. In this case, take the plated end off, slide the mechanism in, and when finished with the above, push the gold end back over the eraser.
